Arcadia at Woodlawn

Woodlawn, a National Trust Historic Site, is proud to announce a new partnership with the Arcadia Center for Sustainable food and agriculture.

Arcadia is restoring "Woodlawn grown" food to local tables (including the dining room at Woodlawn, seen here)

Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more equitable and sustainable local food system.  Thanks to a landmark partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Arcadia Farm was established in 2010 on the grounds of Woodlawn Plantation, originally one of George Washington’s Five Farms and The National Trust’s first historic site.

Arcadia works to improve the health of the community, bolster the viability of local farmers, and preserve the environment for future generations.  The organization achieves this vision through its four key programs:

Arcadia Farm

♦demonstrates environmentally and economically sustainable growing practices

Farm to School

♦connects schools with healthy, local food for school meals and provides

       hands-on food & farm education

Mobile Market

♦delivers fresh, affordable food to underserved DC-area neighborhoods

Food Hub

♦aggregates and distributes local products from small-scale, sustainable

      farms

Arcadia’s mission is important to the National Trust and aligns well with the history of Woodlawn Plantation.  “The Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture will bring into the present day the long history of experimental farming at Woodlawn, from George Washington to the mid-Nineteenth century Quaker owners.  We’re delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Center to further educational programs about food and agriculture at Woodlawn,” said David J. Brown, Executive Vice President, National Trust.
